I am not ashamed to be an Indian, nor am I ashamed to state my nationality when traveling outside the country. Why should I be ashamed of being Indian when there are so many things to be proud of? Why should I be ashamed of being a national of such a land that boasts of being pluralistic in every possible sense? Why should I be ashamed of being a national of such a land that has influenced leaders across the world with its philosophy? Why should I be ashamed of being a national of such a land which has given yoga to the world? Why should I be ashamed of being a national of such a land which has a rich cultural heritage including music, literature, performing arts and fine arts? Why should I be ashamed of being a national of such a land that gave 0 to the world? Why should I be ashamed of being a national of such a land which has a rich culinary culture popular across the world? Why should I be ashamed of being a national of such a land that has given many business thinkers and leaders to the world? Why should I be ashamed of being a national of such a land which has become synonymous with IT and ITES?

While I might be echoing individual sentiments, I am sure that I speak for many. In facts, I think that, world over Indians have garnered a lot of respect through their industriousness, intelligence and creativity and all the Indian Diaspora wear their nationality on their sleeve. If anything we Indians, whether in India or abroad are ashamed of it is our politics, our politicians and our Government. I would even go so far as to say that, except for HD Deve Gowda, all other Indian Prime Ministers have been respected and appreciated everywhere. The same though could not be said about the other politicians and Governments these PMs led.

To re-iterate, Indians are not ashamed of being Indian, nor were we ashamed of our PMs, but we are mockingly ashamed of our Politicians and our Governments.

Having said that, yes I am ashamed of our poor civic sense, I am ashamed of our poor traffic sense, I am ashamed of our inconsiderate behavior, I am ashamed of our lack of sense of time. I am ashamed of our gender bias; I am ashamed of our fascination with fair skin and I am ashamed of our law being biased towards the rich and powerful. These haven’t changed and probably won’t change in a hurry. Nor can any Government singlehandedly change them; Changes in these behavior have to come collectively from within the society all attempts to change them from without have had very limited to no success.

Hence, my advice to anyone who is listening, don’t look to restore the dignity of Indians, we are doing just fine; Nor look to restore the dignity of the post of PM, we have had many great PMs in the past; But look to improve the standard of politicians and the standard of Governance. Nonetheless, even if all efforts in this endeavor were to fail, Indians would still shrug it off and continue being CEOs, Gurus, World leaders, scientists, authors, software engineers etc. with dignity and pride.
